Home

Home is a short publication I made documenting the story of a pigeon fancier.
Following a lot of research about the history and surrounding culture of homing, I began exploring the parallel ideas of home - the way the men create a home in their community, and the way their pigeons find their way back to them.

The story is a fictional narrative, drawing upon essays, interviews and articles I have found or recorded myself.

One fancier said, 'I don't think anybody knows how they do it, something to do with magnets.'

Perhaps the pigeon's homing instinct is the same as the magnetic pull that seems to bring people back home to the North East.

When Computers Wore Skirts

This graphic design project explored the stories of the female 'human computers' employed at NASA in the 40s. I focused on the West Area Computers, a group of all female, all African-American mathematicians who had a huge impact on space exploration and technology.
Above is a collage of Katherine Johnson, who went on to calculate the trajectory path for the 1969 Apollo flight to the Moon, among many other achievements. (She's amazing and her story is fascinating.) I hope to extend this project into a comic series.
Collage using vintage adverts and official NASA images.

Over summer I travelled across Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia to see the Guca Trumpet Festival and kept a little travel journal of comics.

Comics

Some experiments with using a comic format. One painted after seeing the northern lights with my brother, one after going to a bad party. Both painted using watercolours.

The Malody Chronicle

I was commissions by Barry Hyde, singer of The Futureheads, to create an animated music video combining five songs from his solo album. The album is a musical depiction of his experiences of bipolar disorder, while my animation is an abstract depiction of my understanding of his experience, alongside my own. I used hand painted puppets and background pieces, animating the characters by hand on Dragonframe, before compiling the various elements and animating them together in After Effects. The film will be shown at a selection of Barry's album launch gigs and will soon be officially released.

Lessons From Auschwitz

Extracts from 'Lessons from Auschwitz', a zine

I was lucky enough to be able to take part in Lessons from Auschwitz, a scheme which takes groups of students to visit Auschwitz Birkenhau.
Having found the experience hugely overwhelming and emotional, I didn't know how to share the feelings that the visit gave me, let alone pass on the experience. I chose to produce this zine of illustrations and quotes from Holocaust survivors, knowing that the only lessons we can truly learn from Auschwitz are from those who really experienced it.

Fledgling

Extracts from Fledgling, a storybook
This picture book is a story of growing up different, of 'learning to find your wings.' Based upon a dream I had when I was younger of falling out of my nest, the story depicts a young girl falling from her nest, going to school and longing to learn to fly, unable to fit in in school. The style was inspired hugely by Beatrice Alemagna, using collage of different textures, illustration styles and photographs.

Maria

Extracts from 'Maria', a storybook
I wrote and illustrated this children's book as part of my Extended Project. The project sought to provide children, especially young girls, with female role models within the STEM Industry. Using the story of Maria Mitchell, the first professional female astronomer, as a base, I wrote a simple story, accompanied by hand painted images edited on Photoshop.

My Name is Laura

Extracts from a film commissioned by North Yorkshire Advocacy
I made this animated short as part of a larger film I was commissioned to produce for North Yorkshire Advocacy with a friend. The animation was used to tell the story of Laura, a woman who has a learning difficulty, and reached out to Advocacy for support. I used iStopMotion, with a paper puppet, drawn and painted using watercolours.

Stargazer

I was lucky enough to be accepted to take part in the BFI Animation Academy, a UK wide course which offers 25 places a year for an intensive week of studying animation, practising industry standard skills and producing a short film. Our final film was Stargazers, a parallel between a young girl, Lucy, and a historical female astronomer, Maria Mitchell, as they both study the stars to find a comet. I was in charge of the puppet for Lucy and the full figure for Maria, while my peers made puppets for close ups of Maria.
